Spring Term News Summary

Barton St David Scout Group.  April 2019 news update.

It’s the end of an active Spring term and now we look forward to putting the OUT in ScOUTing during the summer.  Time for water sports, a range of camps, outdoor drumming workshops, hikes and expeditions, visits, wide games and so much more. Our youngsters have a brilliant and challenging programme ahead of them (also enjoyed by our helpers) and we are launching our new website http://www.bartonstdavidscout.groupwhich is up to date, clear to read and has lots of useful information.

Our thriving Beaver section(6-8 years) had a busy Spring Term.  56 badges were awarded including Adventure, Emergency Aid, Air Activities, Global Issues, Faith and Community Impact.  They have had visits to Wells Cathedral, Carymoor Environment Centre and they finished the term with an Easter Egg Hunt using maps!  I love seeing the pictures of the Beavers during their sessions as they are so full of energy and their smiles simply fill you with joy.

Another exciting term for our busy Cub Pack (8-10½ years).  They’ve undertaken personal challenges, communicated using Morse Code and up to date digital methods.  They have focused on maps and compass work and tried out their skills around Barton.  No one was lost!  They have displayed some real budding talents in achieving their Entertainers badge and made wooden medallions.  What a varied programme with Cubs earning 55 badges including Scientist, Artist, Musician and Entertainer.

We have never had so many Scouts (10-14 years) as we do now.  It is amazing to see the energy and commitment from 21 young men and women.  When the sessions are indoors the hall creaks at the seams a little but they have made fire without matches, learnt about astronomy, gutted and cooked their fish to eat, been air rifle shooting, built rockets (did you see them fly overhead?) and planned for hikes and camps.  There has been a special emphasis this term on building team work and leadership skills.  Scout badges are quite rightly more challenging to achieve and it’s great to see their progress on the core badgework and the award of 12 badges in Emergency Aid, Hikes, Musician etc.

Our partner Explorer Unit is re-grouping to try to suit the needs of those who wish to attend and three Scouts or Explorers have been selected to go to an international jamboree next year which is an astonishing achievement.

Our successful Group relies on great youngsters, parents and Leaders / Helpers.  We currently are seeking additional help to allow us to take all the children on our waiting list and to do even more activities and outside visits.  Scouting has been described as a free hobby where helpers get to join in with a range of activities that they enjoy.  It should be fun and rewarding rather than a chore.  Have a look at the volunteering FAQ’s on our new website and contact us if you wish to know more.  http://www.bartonstdavidscout.group/join-us/volunteering-q-a/

‘One of my big missions is to encourage people across the UK who have the time, enthusiasm and ability, whatever it is, to put something back into their communities. It’s about a lot of people doing a little. I don’t want to hear any more about kids who can’t join because of a lack of leaders. We’ve got a brilliant, talented nation and I want some of that talent to be used to support young people.’ Chief Scout, Bear Grylls.
